SEEDS Project

SEEDS aims to revitalize the cultivation of ancient grains, naturally resilient to climate change and pests, in Jordan, Tunisia, Egypt, and Morocco. The project combines agronomic field trials, Living Labs, and Community Working Groups for local co-creation, and a digital SEEDS Knowledge Sharing & Capacity Building Platform with four toolboxes
covering research, a recommendation system, and best agricultural practices.

Each country will also develop two prototypes of ancient grain-based foods, linking resilient agriculture to local markets, nutrition, and sustainable food systems. By integrating science, community knowledge, and digital tools, SEEDS fosters culturally grounded and resilient agrifood solutions for the MENA region.

MATE4MEAT

MATE4MEAT develops bio-based, biodegradable, and antimicrobial packaging for fresh meat. The project addresses two problems at once: the environmental burden of conventional meat packaging and the food waste caused by short shelf life. Its packaging concepts are designed to be organically recyclable through composting, which offers an end-of-life route for multilayer structures where mechanical recycling is not a realistic option.

The project focuses on developing and testing sustainable food packaging solutions through three innovative packaging formats: flexible vacuum packaging, PHA-based trays, and cellulose-based trays. These solutions will be designed, prototyped, and tested under realistic conditions to assess their performance for food packaging applications. The project also includes the development and characterisation of biopolymers and natural active agents, supporting the creation of safe and sustainable packaging materials. Their environmental and economic performance will be evaluated through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and techno-economic analysis (TEA). A structured stakeholder engagement programme, including exploitation workshops, Living Labs based on the quadruple helix approach, and collaboration with related EU and PRIMA projects, will support knowledge exchange and innovation. A Stakeholder Advisory Board, bringing together expertise from the meat, retail, and packaging sectors, will provide guidance to the consortium throughout the project.
