The INTACTBioPACK project is organized into six connected Work Packages (WPs). Each work package has a clear role and supports the project’s goal of developing sustainable, active, and intelligent microbiome-based packaging for Mediterranean food products. Together, they combine scientific research, innovative materials, smart sensing technologies, and real-world validation to improve food safety, reduce food waste, and support the circular bioeconomy.

WP1 – Foundational Knowledge & Tools

First, WP1 builds the foundation of the project. It identifies stakeholder needs, defines packaging requirements for Mediterranean foods, and develops decision-support and modelling tools. As a result, the other work packages can build on reliable scientific and technical knowledge.

WP2 – Microbiome Knowledge & Characterization

Next, WP2 studies beneficial microorganisms and their antimicrobial, probiotic, and technological properties. It also develops encapsulated microbes and living coatings that support the creation of innovative food packaging solutions.

WP3 – Microbiome-Based Packaging Solutions

WP3 transforms scientific knowledge into practical packaging solutions. It develops active packaging materials by combining antimicrobial compounds, microbiome-based technologies, and bio-based polymers. Consequently, these materials help preserve food quality, improve food safety, and extend shelf life.

WP4 – Smart Packaging Sensors

Moreover, WP4 develops reusable and low-cost RFID and colorimetric sensors. These smart sensors monitor food freshness and quality in real time. They also connect with smartphone applications to provide easy access to food quality information.

WP5 – Validation & Impact Assessment

WP5 evaluates all technologies developed during the project. It measures technical performance, environmental sustainability, economic feasibility, and consumer acceptance. In addition, it validates the solutions using Mediterranean food case studies to confirm their effectiveness in real conditions.

WP6 – Project Management & Dissemination

Finally, WP6 manages and coordinates the entire INTACTBioPACK project. It supports communication among partners, engages stakeholders, shares project results, and promotes the adoption of the developed technologies across research, industry, and society.

An Integrated Project Approach

All six work packages work closely together throughout the project. They continuously exchange knowledge, materials, and feedback. Therefore, each innovation benefits from the expertise of the other work packages. This collaborative approach helps INTACTBioPACK deliver sustainable, microbiome-based packaging solutions that improve food safety, reduce food waste, and strengthen the Mediterranean food sector.
